Public holidays for calendar year 2026. The days are those named in the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act, 1938 (Act No. 71 of 1938), which the Minister for Home Affairs may amend by notice in the Gazette under section 3; section 4 makes this Act the reference for every other Eswatini law that speaks of a public holiday.

STATUTORY SCHEDULE (as consolidated at 1 December 1998): New Year's Day (1 January); Incwala Day (23 December); Good Friday; Easter Monday; National Flag Day (25 April); Ascension Day; The King's Birthday (19 April); Commonwealth Day (second Monday in June); Public Holiday (22 July); Umhlanga (Reed Dance) (3rd September, 1991); Somhlolo (Independence Day) (6 September); Christmas Day (25 December); Boxing Day (26 December). The Schedule has been amended at least nineteen times by notice (H.C.N.80/1962 through L.N.78/1991 in the consolidation's own amendment note). SUBSTITUTION RULES — TWO OF THEM, and the second is unusual: a holiday falling on a SUNDAY moves to the following Monday, AND if Boxing Day falls on a MONDAY it moves to the following Tuesday. There is no Saturday substitution. 2026 SPECIFICS: Easter Sunday is 5 April 2026, so Good Friday is 3 April, Easter Monday 6 April and Ascension Day (39 days after Easter Sunday) Thursday 14 May. Two Schedule days fall on a Sunday — the King's Birthday (19 April) and Somhlolo/Independence Day (6 September) — so section 2(a) would move them to Monday 20 April and Monday 7 September. Two fall on a Saturday and are simply lost: National Flag Day (25 April) and Boxing Day (26 December). KING'S BIRTHDAY OVERRIDE — DO NOT USE 20 APRIL: the Minister of Home Affairs, HRH Princess Lindiwe, announced on 10 April 2026 that the holiday for His Majesty's 58th birthday, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of his accession (the Ruby Jubilee), is observed on FRIDAY 24 APRIL 2026, and that 'Monday, 20 April 2026 will remain a normal working day' (https://40years.gov.sz/24-april-2026-declared-public-holiday/). That displaces the ordinary section 2(a) Monday substitution for 2026 only. INCWALA AND UMHLANGA ARE NOT SERVED IN THE LIST ABOVE, deliberately: both appear in the statutory Schedule with dates that do not work in practice — Incwala Day is written as '23rd day of December' but Incwala is a movable kingship ritual timed to the full moon nearest the summer solstice, so the operative date shifts between late December and early January and is announced each year; Umhlanga is written as '3rd September, 1991', a one-off date, while the Reed Dance itself runs at the end of August or beginning of September and its holiday is likewise announced annually. No gazetted or officially announced 2026 date for either could be retrieved at confirmation, and only aggregator sites carry candidate dates (they disagree — one gives Incwala Day as 6 January 2026, another as 28 December 2026), so neither is served. Expect both to be declared by notice under section 3. TWO KNOWN DIVERGENCES BETWEEN THE 1998 SCHEDULE AND MODERN PRACTICE, neither of which could be closed against a gazette in this pass: (1) WORKER'S DAY, 1 May, is universally observed in Eswatini and is served above, but it is NOT in the Schedule as consolidated at 1 December 1998 — it must have been added by a post-1998 ministerial notice under section 3 that was not retrievable; (2) COMMONWEALTH DAY, the second Monday in June (8 June in 2026), IS in the 1998 Schedule but does not appear on any modern Eswatini holiday list and is NOT served — presumably removed by a post-1998 notice, again not retrievable. Anyone needing a legally watertight 2026 calendar should obtain the current Schedule from the Ministry of Home Affairs. NAMING: the 22 July day is styled simply 'Public Holiday' in the Schedule; it is the birthday of the late King Sobhuza II. Eswatini's Public Holidays Act, 1938 has its latest consolidation as at 1 December 1998 with an amendment trail ending in 1991, and the current Schedule composition could not be verified - Workers' Day appears in practice but not in that Schedule, while Commonwealth Day appears in the Schedule but is not observed. Two holidays are also date-defective: Incwala Day is written as a fixed 23 December, but Incwala is a lunar-linked kingship rite announced annually by the traditional authorities whose actual date drifts between late December and early January, and Umhlanga is written as '(3rd September, 1991)', a frozen one-off date with no recurring rule, its actual date set each year by royal proclamation. Finally, the s.2(a) Sunday-to-Monday rule turns out to be a DEFAULT the Minister may override: in 2026 the King's Birthday fell on Sunday 19 April and the Minister of Home Affairs gazetted Friday 24 April as the holiday while confirming Monday 20 April remained a working day. So every Sunday-falling Eswatini holiday is gazette-dependent, and 2027 has two (National Flag Day 25 April and Boxing Day 26 December). Holding until the 2027 gazette.
