What this value means
Reference month June 2026, released 6-7 July 2026. Index level 112.2 on the January-December 2023 = 100 base, up 0.3 point (+0.3 per cent) from 111.9 in May 2026; the main contributors were other food products, cigarettes, interest rates on housing loans and other goods and services, partly offset by vegetables. MIND THE TWO MAURITIAN INFLATION MEASURES — they routinely diverge and are easy to swap by mistake: (1) the YEAR-ON-YEAR rate served here, 3.7 per cent for June 2026; and (2) HEADLINE inflation, which Statistics Mauritius defines by the ANNUAL AVERAGE method (average price level over twelve months against the corresponding previous twelve months) — that measure was 4.1 per cent for the twelve months ending June 2026, against 2.9 per cent a year earlier. The Bank of Mauritius quotes both; its 2-5 per cent target is framed on headline inflation. Core measures for June 2026: CORE1 (excludes food, beverages, tobacco and mortgage interest) 6.5 per cent y-o-y, CORE2 (also excludes electricity, gas, other fuels and price-controlled items) 5.9 per cent y-o-y — both well above headline, which is why the MPC raised the Key Rate on 20 May 2026. Y-o-y inflation has been choppy in 2026 (3.5 Feb, 2.7 Mar, 3.6 Apr, 4.3 May, 3.7 Jun) on electricity, cooking gas and fuel price moves. Note the base was rebased to January-December 2023 = 100; older series on a 2007 = 100 base are not comparable in level. Next release: July 2026 CPI, expected in the first week of August 2026 (Statistics Mauritius publishes the monthly CPI around the 5th-8th of the following month).
