STRUCTURE: Togo does not publish a single consolidated annual holiday decree. The fixed days come from Ordonnance n°79-10 (regime des fetes legales), which enumerates THIRTEEN statutory jours feries; the Labour Code (Loi n°2021-012, arts. 200-202) makes them chome et paye - paid if not worked, worked hours carrying a 100% premium - and provides that the list and regime of holidays are set by decree in Council of Ministers. Each movable or discretionary day is then announced individually during the year by a communique of the Minister of the Public Service, Labour and Social Dialogue, binding on BOTH public and private sectors. DATES CONFIRMED BY MINISTERIAL COMMUNIQUE for 2026: Aid el-Fitr Friday 20 March; Independence Day Monday 27 April; Labour Day Friday 1 May; Tabaski Wednesday 27 May. DATES COMPUTED, not separately gazetted: the Christian movable feasts, from Easter Sunday 5 April 2026 - Easter Monday 6 April, Ascension (Easter+39) 14 May, Whit Monday (Easter+50) 25 May. ISLAMIC DATES are set by local moon sighting and the ministry confirms them only days in advance; the two 2026 dates above are the ones actually declared, not astronomical estimates. 13 JANUARY - CORRECTED IN VERIFICATION, READ THIS: an earlier draft EXCLUDED 13 January on the reasoning that no 2026 ministerial communique could be found for it. That reasoning was wrong and the day has been restored. 13 January ('Fete de la Liberation nationale' / 'Jour de la Liberation') is one of the thirteen days enumerated in Ordonnance n°79-10 itself, the very instrument this series is grounded on; the ILO-affiliated WageIndicator/VotreSalaire statement of Togolese labour law lists all thirteen and names it second, and every mainstream 2026 register carries it. Absence of a stand-alone communique is not evidence of repeal, and the pattern argument fails anyway because the ministry demonstrably issues communiques for FIXED days too (1 May 2026, 27 April 2026). No amending or repealing instrument has been located. Honest caveat retained: the commemorative content of the day is politically contested, official ceremonies have been scaled back in various years and opposition groups mark it as a day of mourning - but its legal status as a paid day off stands until an amending instrument says otherwise. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday, so it is a real lost weekday for payroll; if you need certainty, confirm with the ministry. NO SUBSTITUTION RULE: Togolese law provides no 'observed on the following Monday' mechanism. In 2026 this bites three times - Journee des Martyrs (21 June) and Toussaint (1 November) both fall on a SUNDAY and Assomption (15 August) on a SATURDAY; all three are simply absorbed into the weekend with no compensatory weekday off. Do not shift them. AD HOC DAY INCLUDED: 2 January 2026 (a Friday, New Year's Day 2026 being a Thursday) was declared ferie, chome et paye by ministerial communique as a bridge day. It is NOT a statutory holiday under Ordonnance 79-10 and creates no precedent for future years, but it was a real paid day off in 2026, so it is served and flagged rather than silently dropped. Count served: 14 days = the 13 statutory days plus the one ad hoc bridge day. ACCESS QUIRKS: fonctionpublique.gouv.tg serves article bodies via JavaScript, so plain fetches of the /actualites index return only chrome - individual article slugs work better but still render thin; republiquetogolaise.tg returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches and republiquetogolaise.com returns HTTP 404 on older archived slugs; timeanddate.com returned HTTP 403 and publicholidays.africa refused TLS connections from our vantage point. We could not load the text of Ordonnance n°79-10 itself from any Togolese government host; the ILO travail database link to it is dead, so the thirteen-day enumeration is taken from the ILO-affiliated WageIndicator statement of Togolese law rather than from the gazette. All Togolese sources French-only.
